White and Navy Sophia Top!

Overview

I first came across this pattern when I was scrolling on YouTube. Kamryn Cain has some of my absolute FAVORITE designs, so when I saw this gorgeous tutorial, I could not resist. Furthermore, the top was called The Sophia Top-- so obviously I had to do it!! Sophia pride! Representing for all the Sophia's.

My base color was a cream white and my accents color was a navy blue. I partially chose these colors because they're Georgetown colors (HOYA SAXA 💙🤍) but also because, at the time, I was in a The Summer I Turned Pretty/Coastal Grand-daughter/Mediterranean mood. The color scheme is absolutely gorgeous, but feel free to use any other colors. There is also an open back (delineated in the tutorial.)

Materials used

This project was made using very few materials, including"

  • 5.5 mm hook
  • "I Love This Yarn" White yarn
  • "I Love This Yarn" Navy yarn
  • Scissors (for any cutting)
  • OPTIONAL: Crochet place marker (tbh I use bobby pins, but feel free to invest in the actual markers)

In terms of a tutorial, I used this gorgeous tutorial by Kamryn Cain. She has a myriad of fun tutorials. I followed the majority of the steps, modifying some (i.e. I did not do the rim around the edge of the double crochet section, I tied the straps on, etc.) It took me a couple of days to make since I had school and other extracurriculars!

Final Review

This project gets...

☆☆☆☆☆ 5 STARS!!!!!

What I love about this product is the duality of the top. It can be a fancy, formal top (make the boob part bigger if so to prevent your under-boob area from showing), but it can also be fun, cute day top.

Final Verdict- "Will be wearing at uni!"

Things to keep in mind for the future

This project only has one critique, but otherwise I LOVE it!

Pros

While the tutorial utilized various stitches, I greatly enjoyed it. The Sophia Top is such a cute and fun top, and also the holes make it perfect for warm weather because it enables the top to be airy. Wearing this top you will get many compliments and questions from people asking, "did you make this top?", and you can respond by saying, "why yes indeed! ☝️" I loveeee flexing my crocheting skills, and it is automatically a conversation starter.

Cons

THE STRAPS! I need to make them more secure in the future because I found myself readjusting the top once in a while. I could also make the straps with two rows of single crochet for more support perhaps... Also this is a me problem but when wearing the top make sure to adjust the back strings tight for the proper support (iykyk). I did not make it as tight as I should've because I did not take into consideration the fact that the yarn would stretch.

I hope you enjoyed the blog post!
